Sylvia is a signed artist for DMX and Screenmusic International.  Her music is heard on the concert stage, in film, television, and media outlets. Recent works were commissioned for the Culver City Chamber Orchestra, and for the Culver City Symphony’s historic concert, “The American Beat - Women Composers”. Dr. Mann has been recognized by the City of West Covina, County of Los Angeles, and L.A. County Fair as a “Community Hero” for her work in the arts, and received “Woman of the Year in the Arts” awards from the California State Legislature and the US House of Representatives. Her current projects include creating music for a documentary film, and a large mixed format (live and film) production, both set for December 2012 releases

A wonderful performance of Terry Riley's "In C."

Cheri Cole, Trumpet, and many friends!

Composed in 1964, In C is a semi-aleatoric piece for any number of players. Our performance will have approximately 30 players, consisting of strings, woodwinds, brass, electric instruments, and percussion.

Riley composed the pieces as a response to the abstract academic serialist techniques used by composers in the mid-twentieth century. It is widely considered the piece that sparked the minimalist style of composition. Also on this concert will be a number of solo pieces that demonstrate different styles of composition in the 20th and 21st century. Abstract but accessible, and enjoyable to the casual or serious listener.

 
This event promises to deliver extreme joy and satisfaction to the audience (and to the performers!).

In addition to the legendary piece by Terry Riley, we will also be presenting a few extraordinary pieces by some artists featuring modern compositions for violin, viola, guitar, piccolo, and trumpets. "My name is Michael Couper, and I am a classical saxophonist based out of Upland.

I am collaborating on a concert tour with a wonderful pianist from New York, Katie Reimer, February 20-26, 2012. We are presenting a program of contemporary (but accessible and engaging) works by Ligeti, Albright, Schuller, and a rising star, Mohammed Fairouz (www.mohammedfairouz.com). We recently released an album of Mohammed's Music, Critical Models, on the Sono Luminus label, which is receiving a great deal of positive press (www.sequenza21.com, www.wqxr.org)."

Mr. Couper is a founding member of the critically-acclaimed Mimesis Ensemble, a group based in New York City that is dedicated to performing works by living composers.With the Mimesis Ensemble, Mr. Couper performed premieres in many venues across New York, including Symphony Space, Merkin Hall, and Carnegie Hall. About Katie Reimer:

Acclaimed by the New York Times for her "meditative" playing, Katie Reimer is a New York City based concert pianist with broad interests as both a soloist and collaborative musician.  She has performed in numerous venues in California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Texas, Vermont, and Wisconsin, and has appeared internationally in Austria (Vienna), Lithuania (Kaunas), and Sweden (Stockholm).  Her solo and chamber appearances in New York City include Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center, Miller Theatre at Columbia University, Symphony Space, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Klavierhaus, Tenri Cultural Institute, and Le Poisson Rouge.  She has appeared as both a soloist and collaborative musician in two leading Boston venues, Jordan Hall and Symphony Hall. Agnes Szekely Schwartz, violin & viola

Ms Schwartz specializes in authentic performances of 17th and 18th century music, works by Hungarian composers, especially Bartók, art music written on Gypsy and Hungarian themes, 20th century and contemporary music. She improvises and writes her own cadenzas to baroque, classical, gypsy, jazz and some modern works.

Ralph Alberstrom, piano

Ralph Alberstrom received his B.A. from UCLA where he studied music theory and composition with Roy Harris and Henri Lazarof and chamber music with Stanley Plummer. He received his M.M. degree at USC under the tutelage of Gwendolyn Koldofsky, Brooks Smith and Malcolm Hamilton(harpsichord). Currently in demand in the greater Los Angeles area as a teacher and accompanist, Mr. Alberstrom has collaborated in recital with or in the masterclasses of Erick Friedman, Sherry Kloss, Aaron Rosand, Pierre Amoyal, Ruggiero Ricci, Gilbert Reese, Dr. Charles Baker, Lynn Harrell, Paul Stein, Louis Kievman, Martin Chalifour and Paul Badura-Skoda. Under the auspices of the Viola Society, he has recorded programs with Martha Strongin Katz and Paul Coletti.
